Just read somethign about a game called 5150 from Two Hour Wargames. It seems to be what I'm looking for at the moment ... I have a couple of 40k armies in my gaming group collecting dust so want to use them somehow. Has anyone played the game ... is there a way to build rules for your own miniatures? Is there a point cost formula to play theoretically equal battles?

I've heard good things about 5150 but haven't tried it myself. I'm pretty sure that people have adapted it to use their 40k minis but I'm not sure where the fan sites and mods are.

Another option is Fast and Dirty. The rules are free and I've been reading them although I haven't played a game yet. Here's a link to their yahoo group.

We used to play a lot of 40k but I started losing interest during 3rd ed and somewhere along the line never even played a game during 4th and 5th eds. Still have tons of minis for it and wouldn't mind getting some use out of them again someday.

I read throught the rules of Chain Reaction, which is the freely available core fo the 5150 rules. They are radically different from other games I've played. I'm really intrigued to see how they work.

The 5150 book isn't a huge investment so I think I'll buy the pdf version. I'll let you guys know how it works out.

Bought the full 5150 rules and played the first game over the weekend. We were both really confused as you'd expect for the first game ... especially as it's so different from other games we've played. I think we played many parts of the rules wrong and we also started out with space marines who were really too elite for an intro game. The space marines ended up passing almost every reaction test they needed so we didn't get a great feel for that aspect of the game.

There were definitely elements that I liked and as I started reading the rules again, I realized we did a lot of stuff wrong. Still, it's definitely an interesting game and I suspect the next game will work out better.
