Anyone a fan of the Manchester band, James? I like them a lot ... probably my favourite band. They broke up 7 years back and now decided to get back together. They released a new CD called "Hey Ma", which is really good. I've been listening to it a lot lately and the songs are really catchy. Some great lyrics ... one of my favourite is a very simple line that goes: "I don't forgive, I forget".

Anyway, anyone else like them?

I remember they were popular in England when I first arrived about 9 years ago before I was married but I was so busy chasing tail that I don't remember any of their music so I can't make a judgement.

I was a James fan of old and then went off them, before rediscovering them (thanks to my wife). Saw them play in San Francisco, last October.

Sorry for the thread necro (I checked the FAQ and it doesn't seem to be againts forum rules -- but apologies, anyway).

Don't worry about thread necro ... it's not against the rules here. Never understood why it's even frowned upon to be honest.

I really liked the latest CD ... it actually got my wife hooked on them as well. Now she's going through the earlier CDs and loving it.

I've never seen them live ... how are they? Do they put on a good show or are they one of those bands that aren't that great live?

I started off with (and this is showing my age, here) Strip-mine in 1988/89 -- I was really into their early, folky stuff. The weird thing is that I only tend to know individual tracks rather than whole albums, nowadays. I suspect this is a direct result of listening to music most frequently on an .mp3 player/ iPod.

They are bloody fantastic. Really good show.

My favourite James CD's have got to be Pleased to Meet You, Laid and Whiplash. I do enjoy their earlier folky stuff as well.

My favourite songs are Alaskan Pipeline, Of Monsters And Heroes And Men, Lost a Friend and Five-O. So many good songs though all-in-all it's hard to choose.

Alongside James, I'd say my top 3 favourite bands would be Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

Sometimes from Laid was what initially got me back into them after a bit of a hiatus. I'd found the stuff from Seven a little over-produced (dunno if I feel the same way now -- I was all about the "indie cred" back then Embarassed Wink ).

I currently love:
  • Getting Away With It (All Messed Up) from Pleased to Meet You
  • We're Going to Miss You off Millionaires
  • Strip-Mining from ... ummm ... Strip-Mine

All are getting lots of play at the moment. Lots more that I like though.

(I don't actually own anything by the Zep or Pink Floyd. Shocked That obviously needs to be corrected. I think my fave bands at the moment might be Pulp [Different Class was the best "Britpop" record, IMHO], The 6ths (and all of

), and Belle & Sebastian. I now realize that I don't spend nearly enough time listening to music anymore.)

I'd agree with you on Seven ... it does feel somewhat over-produced. To be honest, I was never a huge fan of the trumpets that they use a lot in that album, if I remember correctly.

I like Getting Away with It and We're Going to Miss You ... definitely among my favourite songs. Never got into strip mining to be honest.

I really like Pulp as well though I've not heard much from the band lately. Different Class was a stellar album ... so many memorable songs. Are Pulp still around or have they broken up?

I think I might have heard one or two songs from Belle and Sabastian. I haven't heard of the 6th ... I'll have to check out both bands in more detail.
